CALL FOR APPLICATION FOR 2015/2016 FINANCIAL YEAR


Background

The National Commission for Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI) seeks to create opportunity for 7 (seven) interns during the 2015/2016 Financial Year to gain workplace experience in a science, technology and innovation (ST&I) institution. The internship is for a period of 3(three) months and renewable once resulting in a maximum period of six months depending on the performance and availability of funds. The programmeentails on-the-job training and development of skills that would enable interns to be more employable and marketable at the end of the internship.


Internship Description

Interns will be attached to relevant Schedules/Divisions of NACOSTI to assist in the Implementation  of  on-going  activities  under  the  guidance  of  experienced  staff  of  the Commission. These activities include:
i.      Identification of pertinent issues in ST&I relevant to national development aspirations. ii.      Preparation of research proposals on the ST&I issues.
iii.       Undertaking  data  collection  and  preparation  of  policy  papers  for  discussion  on  the identified ST&I issues.
iv.      Preparation  and  compilation  of relevant  materials,  dissemination  of tools  as  well  as regular news updates.
v.      Preparation for stakeholders’ consultative meetings and feedback follow ups.

vi.      Assessing the value of research results to national development.

vii.      Monitoring research activities in the science area to ensure that they are consistent with the national development policy.


viii.     Acquiring and maintaining information emanating from activities in science area.


The attachment provides opportunity for the interns to gain exposure to the workings of the Commission specifically and generally to the wider issues of ST&I. The interns will be expected to get adequate appreciation of the national ST&I sector issues so as to consider career in the sector.

Qualifications

To qualify as an intern with NACOSTI, an applicant must fulfill the following requirements:

i.      Be enrolled in a university degree programme or be a recent university graduate of not more than two years at the time of application.
ii.      Be proficient  in  an  area of science  and  technology or other related  to  NACOSTI’s functions and be able to work with standard software applications such as current Microsoft Office.
iii.     Be hard working and ready to abide by the code of conduct espoused by NACOSTI

including being:

a.   Team player.

b.   Able to accept multiple tasks in the interest of gaining work experience.

c.   Willing to learn and take instructions and share talents, abilities and interests. d.   Receptive to feedback and mentoring.
