National Commission for
Science, Technology and Innovation (NACOSTI) chairman Prof Tom Ogada has vowed
that the Commission will help trans- form lives through science. This is by achieving
the Big 4 Agenda through science, technology and innovation and ultimately, Kenya
Vision 2030.
Prof Ogada said this during
the launch of the Commission’s latest strategic plan and national research priorities
as well as the unveiling of the ISO
9001:2015 certificate awarded by the Kenya Bureau of Standards.
“We want to emphasise on and support
science, technology and innovation activities that can positively change
the lives of Kenyans,” he stressed.
Prof Ogada said because
carrying out research is an expensive undertaking yet resources are scare, NACOSTI
has worked with other stakeholders to identify
national research priorities.
“So, resources from government and development partners will
only be invested for the greatest impact; for tangible
results in the economy,” he said.
He added: “NACOSTI will
monitor and evaluate the research areas being supported by government and to what extent they have led to
tangible results. In Africa, Kenya is among the few nations doing that: prioritizing national research areas. We believe
in implementing the national research priorities as they will contribute to achieving the Big 4 Agenda through
science, technology and innovation.”
He said that through a consultative
process that began in May 2018, NACOSTI and other agencies have identified research
areas which should be funded to truly impact the economy. He added that
since NACOSTI’s mission is to facilitate quality in research through regulation,
promotion and provision of advisory services, it has invested in the ISO 9001:2015 quality management system.
“This enables NACOSTI to
provide leadership in the science, technology and innovation sector,” Prof Ogada
explained
He revealed that the
Commission’s 2018-2022 strategic plan will address challenges identified during
the implementation of the previous plan.
This document outlines
NACOSTI’s strategic focus in the next five years and details how the Commission
will support the science, technology and innovation sector to thrive and boost the
economy. In the foreword to the strategic plan, the NACOSTI Board Chairman
notes that the sector must rise to the occasion.
Says Prof Ogada: “As
the Kenyan economy transforms to a knowledge-based one, the Science, Technology
and Innovation sector has to position itself to effectively play its critical
role.”
